Invisible: Art about the Unseen, 1957-2012 at HAYWARD GALLERY

Invisible Art brings together works from the past half century that explore ideas related to the invisible and the hidden. The exhibition includes work by some of the most important artists of our time as well as younger artists who have expanded on their legacy.

Many of the works in Invisible seek to direct our attention towards the unwritten rules and conventions that shape our understanding of art. Other works invoke invisibility to underscore the limits of our perceptual capacities or to emphasize the role of our imagination in responding to works of art. Some use invisibility as a metaphor that relates to the suppression of information or the political disappearance and marginalization of social groups.

I have just discovered the work by Song Dong that I really like.. it captures such an something so personal and intimate and yet so ephemeral. Reminds me a lot of the work of Andy Goldsworthy and yet rooted in a totally different tradition.

Below is a text about this piece of work from the Webiste of the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art:

Writing diary with water 1995–present comprises four photographs that document an ongoing performance project.

Since 1995, Song Dong has used a calligraphy brush to write daily diary entries in water on a particular block of stone. When Song Dong was a child, his father encouraged him to practise his calligraphy in water on stone because they could not afford ink and paper. As an adult, he returned to this practice when he realised that conventional diary writing posed a risk of disclosure:
‘You might not think about this generally but during the diary writing process consider that someone else might be reading this someday. Since considering this I stopped writing a traditional diary’. (1)

Through this invisible journal, Song Dong engages in the process of diary keeping, knowing that his diary will never be read and that his thoughts will remain secret. The water diary has now become an important part of his life and art:
‘After a while this stone slowly became a part of me. That means I could say anything to it and be unscrupulous. This act became a part of life and it made me more relaxed.’ (2)

If I slow the video, the effect is totally different.  I'll keep on working together with Sunday and show the video project in the final show.

Bruce Nauman: Days at ICA

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday

...

The work invokes both the banality and the profundity of the passing of each day, and invites reflection on how we measure, differentiate and commemorate time. Nauman’s work constantly tests rational systems of language, spatial and bodily encounters, the passage of time and psychology, through constructed environments. His pioneering work spans more than five decades and encompasses a wide spectrum of media including sculpture, drawing, site-specific installation, sound pieces, neon, photography, film, video, performance and text/language.

Piotr Janas at ICA

Janas presents amoebic forms recalling organs, bodily fluids and various body parts that contrast with hard edged machine-like mechanisms that seemingly puncture and wound. Fleshy pinks and reds associated with living organisms are juxtaposed with violent brushstrokes. Each painting evokes the actions of scratching, pulling and prodding, creating a sense of depth as one representational element penetrates another. Organic forms taper into talons as they scrape against the walls of their own interior. Mixing the imagery of Constructivism, Francis Bacon and Paul Thek, these dark invocations are ultimately indebted to the language of surrealism.

Martin Creed at SKETCH

Martin Creed is one of the foremost contemporary artists in the UK today. Based in London, Creed is internationally acclaimed for working across a multitude of disciplines including installation, sculpture, music, dance and film. Popularly known in the UK for his Turner prize winning presentation of Work No. 227, The lights going on and off, he has had numerous solo museum and institutional exhibitions as well as work commissioned for the public realm including Work No. 1197, All the bells in a country rung as quickly and as loudly as possible for three minutes, which will mark the start of the 2012 Olympic season.

Martin, sketch this…
In the first of a new long-term programme of artist-conceived restaurants, Turner-prize winning artist Martin Creed presents a series of functional and decorative works, creating an environment that is at once an exhibition, an artwork and a restaurant at sketch. Exemplary of the logical and welcoming systems that recur throughout his work, the floor, walls and furniture take the form of new artworks inspired by the boundaries of art and functionality.

Work No. 1347 consists of 96 different types of marble, in a formation of zigzagging lines across the floor, while Work No. 1343 is a new work specially made for the restaurant in which every single piece of cutlery, glassware, lamp, chair and table is different. This work brings together a mix of the mass produced and hand-crafted, from classic antiques to contemporary design from around the world. Four different wall drawings are overlaid by 18 paintings by Creed, including the series of four canvases Work No. 1100 (2011).
