Crouching over the sleeping woman, the Minotaur is both brutal presence and a tender lover. In 1943 Picasso remarked to his lover Francoise Gilot, to whom he showed the Vollard Suite etchings: 'He's studying her, trying to read her thoughts...trying to decide whether she loves him because he's a monster...It's hard to say whether he wants to wake her or kill her'.
